Description

Hampson and Hauff identified risk factors associated with short-term mortality for a patient with carbon monoxide poisoning who is being treated with hyperbaric oxygen. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle and University of Michigan.

Patient selection: carbon monoxide poisoning being treated with hyperbaric oxygen

The mortality rate was 2.6%.

Risk factors for short term mortality:

(1) fire as source of carbon monoxide (with increased risk of thermal burns)

(2) loss of consciousness

(3) elevated blood carboxyhemoglobin concentration (>= 30 percent)

(4) metabolic acidosis (<= 7.30, high if <= 7.20)

(5) endotracheal intubation
