Description

Haisma et al identified risk factors for lymph node metastases in a patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the skin over the head and neck. These features can help to identify a patient who should be carefully followed after the resection. The authors are from the University of Groningen in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: squamous cell carcinoma of skin over the head and neck

Outcome: lymph node metastases (occurred in 16%)

Risk factors for lymph node metastases:

(1) location on the ear

(2) moderate or poorly differentiated

(3) diameter > 50 mm (> 5 cm)

(4) thickness > 2 mm

The risk of metastases is greatest in the first year, with metastases rare after 5 years.
