Repair of a paracolostomy hernia may be associated with complications if certain risk factors are present. The authors are from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Patient selection: paracolostomy hernia
Risk factors for mortality:
(1) age > 70 years
(2) emergency surgery

where:
• Although no mortality is given for the patient <= 70 years old undergoing emergency surgery, considering the 10-fold increase in risk for those > 70 years of age suggests that there should be some increased risk.
Emergency surgery was associated with:
(1) pulmonary complications (pneumonia, need for postoperative mechanical ventilation, reintubation)
(2) septic shock
(3) surgical site infection
(4) death
Elective surgical repair of a paracolostomy hernia should be performed, especially in older patients.
