Description

Govender and Madiba identified factors affecting outcome in patients with trauma to the large bowel. These can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from University of KwoZulu-Natal and King Edward VIII Hospital in South Africa.


 

Risk factors associated with mortality:

(1) shock on admission

(2) transfusion of > 6 units of blood

(3) surgical delay <= 12 hours (perhaps selecting for more serious injury)

(4) Injury Severity Score (ISS) > 20

(5) number of associated organs injured

where:

• Older and immunocompromised patients are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality following abdominal trauma but these groups were not involved in the study group.
