Risk factors for primary breast abscess:
(1) cigarette smoking
(2) age >= 38 years at diagnosis
(3) nipple piercing if a subareolar abscess
Risk factors for recurrent breast abscess after treatment:
(1) cigarette smoking
(2) surgical treatment of the initial abscess
(3) pathogen other than Staphylococcus aureus
