Description

Go et al evaluated risk factors associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in a neonate. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Fukushima Medical University in Japan.

Patient selection: neonate

The most significant risk factor was birth asphyxia.

Other risk factors reported include:

(1) neonatal sepsis

(2) small for gestational age

(3) low Apgar scores

(4) large hemangioma

(5) fetal hydrops

(6) maternal pregnancy-induced hypertension

(7) placental abruption

(8) vanishing twin

The risk of DIC increases with the number of risk factors present.
