Description

Gao et al identified risk factors for antibiotic resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infecting a patient with bronchiectasis. This may impact the selection of antibiotics to treat the infection and the steps needed to contain the resistant strain. The authors are from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in China.

Patient selection: bronchiectasis

Risk factors for resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa by logistic regression analysis:

(1) antibiotic therapy in the past month

(2) 3 or more acute exacerbations in the past year

(3) greater dyspnea

(4) more severe lung disease high-resolution CT scan of the lungs

The risk for an antibiotic resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa increased with the number of risk factors present.

Being colonized with antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not associated with all-cause mortality in the study population.
