Description

Fu et al evaluated older adults with Acinetobacter baumanii bacteremia in China. They identified risk factors for extensive drug resistance and for mortality. The authors are from FuXing Hospital and Capital Medical University in Beijing.


 

Patient selection: adult > 65 years of age with Acinetobacter baumanii bacteremia

 

Resistance

Resistant to

multidrug (MDR)

>= 3 of the following: aminoglycosides, antipseudomonal penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination, antipseudomonal carbapenema, antipseudomonal fluoroquinolones, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, cephalosprins, ampicillin-sulbactam, polymyxins, tetracyclines

extensive (XDR)

all of the antibiotics listed above except polymyxins and tigecycline

carbapenem (CR)

imipenem or meropenem

 

Risk factors for extensive drug resistance:

(1) COPD

(2) bedridden

(3) central venous catheter

 

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) extensive drug resistance

(2) in the ICU

(3) concurrent fungal infection

(4) age >= 70 years
