Description

Fram et al evaluated hemodialysis patients who developed bloodstream infections (BSI). They identified risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality. The authors are from Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo.

Patient selection: hemodialysis, age >= 18 years

Outcome: morbidity (hospitalization) and mortality (death within 15 days after diagnosis)

Risk factors (multiple logistic regression):

(1) older age (odds ratio 1.05 per year)

(2) infection with Staphylococcus aureus (odds ratio 8.67)

(3) infection with multi-drug resistant organism (odds ratio 2.75)

where:

Categories related to resistance were only sensitive or multi-resistant.

Prevention of these infections through standardized protocols is indicated.
