Description

Fernandez-Sabe et al identified risk factors for infection with Listeria monocytogenes in solid organ transplant recipients. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring for listeriosis. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Spain.

Patient selection: solid organ transplant recipient

Risk factors for listeriosis from multivariate analysis:

(1) diabetes mellitus

(2) therapy with high dose corticosteroids (>= 20 mg prednisone for >= 1 month OR 3+ pulses of intravenous methylprednisolone) within the past 6 months

(3) presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) within the past 6 months

where:

• An episode of allograft rejection in the past 6 months was a risk factor for listeriosis on univariate analysis.

Factors protecting against listeriosis:

(1) trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) prophylaxis
