Description

Fann et al reported factors predictive of mortality in a patient with leptospirosis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from University Tunku Abdul Ruhman and Taiping General Hospital in Malaysia.

Patient selection: resident of a region endemic for leptospirosis

Mortality rate: 14%

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) age >= 70 years

(2) one or more organ dysfunctions (renal, respiratory, hepatic, CNS)

(3) admission to the ICU

In addition, co-infection with another organism (malaria, dengue, scrub typhus, etc) is relatively common.
