Description

Fang et al reported risk factors for a surgical site infection after craniotomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management to reduce infection risk. The authors are from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hangzhou, China.

Patient selection: craniotomy

Risk factors for postoperative surgical site infection:

(1) other infection (odds ratio 5.4)

(2) number of operations > 1 (OR 2.4), presumably neurosurgical

(3) CSF leak (OR 8.8)

(4) CSF drainage (OR 2.6)

(5) duration of operation > 4 hours (OR 1.8)

(6) venous sinus entry (OR 4)

(7) ASA scale >= 3 (OR 1.4)

(8) male sex (OR 1.5)

(9) nontraumatic reason for surgery (OR 2.1 in case-control studies)

The risk for a surgical site infection increases with the number of risk factors present.
