Elsamman et al identified risk factors for worsening of esophageal varices in a patient with gastric varices treated with balloon-occluded retrograde obliteration (B-RTO). The authors are from Osaka City University and Sohag University (Egypt).
Patient selection: gastric varices in a patient with portal hypertension (Child-Pugh A or B) treated with B-RTO
Risk factors for worsening of esophageal varices:
(1) high resistance index (>= 0.24) of gastric varices measured by endoscopic color Doppler ultrasonography (ECDUS, odds ratio 4.1)
(2) presence of esophageal varices prior to B-RTO (odds ratio 5.8)
(3) Child-Pugh class B (odds ratio 2.9)
