Description

Postinfectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may be associated with a number of risk factors.

Risk factors for postinfectious IBS:

(1) traveler’s diarrhea or pathogen (Campylobacter, Shigella, Yersinia)

(2) psychological disorders (other than anxiety or depression)

(3) longer duration of initial infection (> 3 weeks)

(4) younger age

Vomiting during the initial phase of the infection may reduce the risk of postinfectious IBS.
