Description

Dulski et al reported risk factors for inpatient mortality of an earthquake victim. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management.

Earthquake: Haiti 2010

Patients admitted to the hospital were in 2 main categories:

(1) those with traumatic injury

(2) those with exacerbation of a chronic medical condition

Risk factors for inpatient mortality:

(1) age <= 15 years

(2) ICU admission (AOR 7.6 for adult; AOR 7.8 for NICU or pediatric)

(3) cardiorespiratory diagnosis (AOR 8.5)

(4) penetrating injury

A patient who survives hospitalization may have long-term needs.
