Description

Drapeau et al identified risk factors for surgical site infections (SSI) in HIV-infected patients. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Italy.

Patient selection: HIV-infected patient having surgery

The rate of SSI in HIV-infected patients was approximately twice that of patients not infected with HIV. Most patients (93%) had an NNIS score <= 1.

Most SSIs were superficial (72%). About 60% were diagnosed during the hospital stay with most of the remaining cases within 30 days of discharge. The presence of an SSI increased the total hospital stay.

Risk factors for SSI:

(1) concurrent hepatitis C infection (HCV)

(2) age >= 45 years

(3) type of surgery (cardiovascular, orthopedic, genitourinary)
