DiTosto et al reported risk factors for readmission of a woman who has delivered a stillbirth. These can help to identify a woman who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Stanford University and Karolinska Insitutet.
Patient selection: status post stillbirth
Outcome: unplanned readmission
Rate of readmission: 2.2% by 6 weeks; 3.9% by 9 months
Risk factors for readmission:
(1) severe maternal morbidity other than transfusion (aOR 3.0)
(2) transfusion at delivery (aOR 2.0)
(3) gestational hypertension or preeclampsia (aOR 1.9)
(4) prepregnancy hypertension (aOR 1.8)
(5) diabetes mellitus (aOR 1.8)
(6) antenatal hospitalization (aOR 1.8)
(7) cesarean delivery (aOR 1.7)
(8) length of stay > 2 days after vaginal delivery OR length of stay > 4 days after cesarean delivery
(9) non-Hispanic Black race (aOR 1.4)
(10) education less than high school (aOR 1.4)
The risk of readmission increases with the number of risk factors present.
