Description

Dhochak et al identified risk factors for malnutrition in children with cystic fibrosis. These can help to identify a patient who may require nutritional support. The authors are from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Patient selection: cystic fibrosis

Measure of malnutrition: weight for age Z-score

The prevalence of malnutrition is high in children with cystic fibrosis.

Risk factors for malnutrition from the linear regression model:

(1) persistent steatorrhea (reflecting fat malabsorption)

(2) number of pulmonary exacerbations

Other factors associated with the 2 risk factors:

(1) diarrhea

(2) dose pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy

(3) inhaled antibiotics

Improvement in nutritional status may be associated with improved pulmonary function.
