Delpachitra et al reviewed reports of surgical site infection following minor dermatological surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from James Cook University in Brisbane.
Patient selection: minor dermatological surgery
Risk factors for surgical site infection:
(1) re-excision of skin cancer
(2) excision performed below the knee
(3) intraoperative hemorrhage
Other factors that may contribute:
(1) diabetes mellitus
(2) smoking
(3) corticosteroid therapy
(4) large skin excision (may no longer be minor surgery)
(5) complex surgical technique (may no longer be minor surgery)
The quality of skin preparation and wound care may also impact the risk of infection.
