Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. del Olmo et al identified ertain factors associated with mortality after the first episode of bleeding. The authors are from Hospital Clinico Universitario in Valencia, Spain.
Patient selection: hepatic cirrhosis with first episode of upper gastrointestinal bleeding
Outcome: mortality
Risk factors:
(1) renal failure
(2) rebleeding
(3) presence of hepatocellular carcinoma
(4) hepatic encephalopathy
where:
• The risk factors include 2 organ failures (hepatic and renal). Other organ failures might also increase risk.
