Description

Deganello et al identified a number of risk factors associated with the development of multiple head and neck cancers. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Florence in Italy.

Multiple malignancies of the head and neck may involve tumors arising in:

(1) the larynx

(2) the oral cavity

(3) the orophyarynx

(4) the hypopharynx

Risk factors for multiple malignancies in the head and neck:

(1) continuing to smoke after the first head and neck cancer was diagnosed (if the patient is a smoker)

(2) microsatellite instability (MSI)

(3) chromosome fragility (based on bleomycin test on peripheral blood lymphocytes)

Differential diagnosis:

(1) lung or other cancer metastasizing to the head and neck
