De Jong et al identified risk factors for cardiac arrest during intubation of a critically-ill adult. Occurrence of a cardiac arrest during intubation is associated with 28-day mortality. The authors are from multiple institutions in France.
Outcome: asystole, bradycardia or ventricular dsyrhythmia with nonmeasurable blood pressure during or within 5 minutes after intubation that requires cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Risk factors for a cardiac arrest:
(1) arterial hypotension with systolic blood pressure < 90 mm Hg prior to intubation (odds ratio 3.4)
(2) hypoxemia prior to intubation (odds ratio 4.0)
(3) absence of pre-oxygenation prior to the intubation (odds ratio 3.6)
(4) overweight or obese (BMI > 25 kg per square meter; odds ratio 2.0)
(5) age > 75 years (odds ratio 2.3)
