Description

D'Antonio et al identified risk factors for postnatal complications in a neonate with a prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis. These can help to identify a neonate who may require more aggressive management. Patient selection: gastroschisis diagnosed in utero by ultrasonography

The most important risk factor was intra-abdominal bowel dilatation (IABD) which was associated with:

(1) bowel atresia

(2) polyhydramnios

(3) neonatal death

Other findings associated with increased risk of postnatal complications:

(1) polyhydramnios (associated with bowel atresia)

(2) gastric dilatation (associated with neonatal death)
