Description

Cousins et al identified risk factors for an accelerated rate of growth of an aneurysm involving the popliteal artery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Patient selection: popliteal artery aneurysm

Risk factors for accelerated growth:

(1) diameter >= 20 mm

(2) presence of luminal thrombus

(3) atrial fibrillation

The risk of accelerated growth increases with the number of risk factors present.

In addition, a growth rate > 1.22 mm per year since initial diagnosis is associated with interventions.

growth rate in mm per year =

= ((diameter now) - (diameter at diagnosis)) / (((date now) - (date diagnosis)) / 365)
