Description

Considine et al reported factors associated with an unplanned readmission within 1 day of hospital discharge. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from careful discharge planning. The authors are from Dealth University in Australia.

Patient selection: status post discharge from acute care hospital

Outcome: readmission <= 1 day after discharge

Factors associated with readmission:

(1) discharge on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday

(2) significant pain

(3) leaving against medical advice (OR 3.8)

(4) admitted to short stay unit (OR 1.8)

(5) > 10 previous hospital admissions in the past 6 months (OR 2.0)

The reason for readmission varied widely with 17 chief complaints other than uncontrolled pain.
