Description

Coleman et al reported risk factors for a patient in alcohol withdrawal leaving against medical advice (AMA). A patient with these factors may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Hull, University of Kent, and Hull Royal Infirmary in the UK.

Patient selection: adult in alcohol withdrawal

Risk factors for leaving against medical advice (AMA):

(1) emergency admission

(2) weekend

(3) homelessness

(4) male gender

(5) young age

(6) short time since admission

A patient who leaves AMA is at increased risk for readmission.

A patient with these risk factors may require additional resources to avoid leaving against medical advice.
