Description

Ciufo et al identified risk factors for reoperation following a below-the-knee amputation. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Rochester and Georgetown University.

Patient selection: below-the-knee amputation

Reasons for reoperation:

(1) ischemia

(2) infection

(3) breakdown of the incision

(4) other complications

Risk factors for reoperation:

(1) patient transferred from another facility (adjusted odds ratio 1.3)

(2) recent smoker (adjusted odds ratio 1.3)

(3) bleeding disorder (adjusted odds ratio 1.3)

(4) preoperative mechanical ventilation (adjusted odds ratio 2.4)

The adjusted odds ratios are relatively low, indicating that multiple risk factors need to be present to be predictive.
