Pyogenic liver abscess can be a life-threatening infection that needs to be diagnosed early and treated aggressively to minimize complications.
Factors associated with hospital mortality on multivariate analysis:
(1) presence of malignancy
(2) hyperbilirubinemia
(3) elevated aPTT
where:
• Hyperbilirubinemia was ascribed to liver organ failure secondary sepsis.
• Elevated aPTT was associated with DIC secondary to sepsis.
Additional factors affecting prognosis:
(1) Image-guided drainage with or without catheter placement can be lifesaving.
(2) Development of sepsis with multi-organ failure worsens the prognosis.
