Description

Choovuthayakorn et al identified factors associated with posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies that are associated with poor visual outcome. The authors are from Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

Poor outcome:final visual acuity <20/200

Factors associated with a poor outcome in >= 80% of patients (univariate analysis):

(1) endophthalmitis (100%)

(2) retinal detachment (100%)

Factors associated with a poor outcome in 40 to 79% of patients (univariate analysis):

(1) relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD, 72%)

(2) initial visual acuity < 20/200 (57%)

(3) entry site cornea (60%) or sclera (43%)

(4) lens injury (45%)

(5) retinal break (46%)

Factors associated with a final visual acuity >= 20/40:

(1) corneosclera as entry point (83%)

(2) initial visual acuity >= 20/40 (67%)
