Description

Chiang et al reported risk factors for stricture formation following repair of esophageal atresia. The authors are from National Taiwan University and the National Defense Medical Center in Taipei.

Patient selection: status post repair of esophageal atresia

Risk factors identified in current study:

(1) a gap > 1.5 cm between esophageal pouches

(2) Gross type A (can have a gap > 1.5 cm)

Other risk factors noted:

(1) anastomotic tension

(2) anastomotic leakage

(3) gastroesophageal reflux

(4) need for staged esophageal reconstruction (Nice et al)

The presence of a stricture can often be treated by repeated endoscopic dilatations.
