Description

Transvaginal mesh may be used in women with pelvic organ prolapse to add structural support. Cheng et al identified risk factors for erosions occurring over the mesh. The authors are from Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.

Patient selection: status post pelvic organ prolapse surgery with use of transvaginal mesh

Outcome: mucosal erosions

Risk factors:

(1) hysterectomy (odds ratio 27.0)

(2) hypertension (odds ratio 6.0)

A small erosion (< 0.5 cm) can often be managed conservatively.

A large erosion often requires a surgical revision.

Recurrent erosions can occur and are managed by repeated revisions.
