Description

Chen et al identified risk factors for mortality in a patient with renal cell carcinoma and an associated venous tumor thrombus. In general, the prognosis for these patients is poor. The authors are from Peking University.

Risk factors for mortality from multivariate analysis:

(1) positive lymph node metastasis (odds ratio 2.6)

(2) tumor necrosis (odds ratio 2.1)

(3) sarcomatoid differentiation (odds ratio 3.3)

(4) invasion into perinephric fat (odds ratio 2.0)

Additional factors with a p value of 0.07:

(1) blood transfusion

(2) surgery time >= 349 minutes.

Some parameters not found to be independent risk factors:

(1) distant metastases

(2) extent of the tumor thrombus
