Description

Chapuis et al identified risk factors for prolonged ileus following resection of a colorectal cancer. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Concord Hospital in New South Wales and The University of Sydney in Australia.

Patient selection: colorectal resection of a cancer

Outcome: prolonged ileus (lasting >= 15 days)

Risk factors for prolonged ileus:

(1) male sex (OR 1.7)

(2) peripheral vascular disease (OR 1.8)

(3) respiratory comorbid conditions (OR 1.6)

(4) urgent surgery (OR 2.2)

(5) perioperative transfusion (OR 1.6)

(6) construction of a stoma (OR 1.4)

(7) surgery lasting >= 3 hours (OR 1.6)

The odds ratios are relatively low, so multiple risk factors need to be present to indicate increased risk.
