Description

Cartin-Ceba et al identified risk factors for fetal loss in a pregnant woman admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Patient selection: pregnant woman admitted to the ICU for a non-obstetrical reason

Risk factors for fetal loss from a multivariate analysis:

(1) maternal shock

(2) transfusion of blood products to the mother

(3) early gestational age, especially first trimester (will use < 16 weeks in the implementation)

The greater the number of risk factors present, the greater the risk of fetal loss.
