Description

Carlock et al reported risk factors associated with elbow joint contracture following surgical repair of a traumatic elbow fracture. The presence of risk factors may indicate the need for more aggressive management. The authors are from NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital in New York City.

Patient selection: elbow fracture status post surgical repair

Preoperative risk factors for contracture:

(1) AO/OTA fracture type 13-C (OR 13.7)

(2) multiple noncontiguous fractures (OR 3.7)

(3) ulnohumeral dislocation at the time of injury (OR 4.9)

Postoperative risk factors for joint stiffness at 6-week follow-up visit:

(1) elbow range of motion less than 50 degrees flexion/extension (OR 23)

(2) heterotopic ossifications seen in X-ray (OR 6.7)
