Bwakura-Dangarembizi et al reported risk factors for 1-year mortality following hospitalization for severe acute malnutrition in children of Zimbabwe or Zambia. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. Patient selection: hospitalized child with severe acute malnutrition, median age 17.4 months
Outcome: 1-year overall mortality
Risk factors for 1-year mortality:
(1) ongoing severe malnutrition at hospital discharge by WHO criteria (aHR 2.3)
(2) cerebral palsy (aHR 5.6)
(3) nonedematous malnutrition (aHR 2.2)
(4) HIV-positive (aHR 3.8)
The risk of mortality increases as the number of risk factors increase.
