Description

Bwakura-Dangarembizi et al reported risk factors for 1-year mortality following hospitalization for severe acute malnutrition in children of Zimbabwe or Zambia. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from University of Zimbabwe, University of Zambia, Queen Mary University of London and Zvitambo Institute of Child Health Research.

Patient selection: hospitalized child with severe acute malnutrition, median age 17.4 months

Outcome: 1-year overall mortality

Risk factors for 1-year mortality:

(1) ongoing severe malnutrition at hospital discharge by WHO criteria (aHR 2.3)

(2) cerebral palsy (aHR 5.6)

(3) nonedematous malnutrition (aHR 2.2)

(4) HIV-positive (aHR 3.8)

The risk of mortality increases as the number of risk factors increase.
