Description

Bucher et al identified risk factors for surgical site infections (SSI) in pediatric patients. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis.

Patient selection: age <= 18 years of age

Rate of SSI in study population: 1%

Risk factors for SSI

(1) African-American race (odds ratio 2.4)

(2) neonate (odds ratio 5.0) or infant (odds ratio 1.7)

(3) postoperative location in ICU (odds ratio 6.6) or hospital (odds ratio 2.6)

(4) urinary catheter (odds ratio 3.6)

(5) implantable device (odds ratio 3.1)

where:

• A neonate was <= 30 days old. An infant ranged from 31 to 365 days old.

• A child had a slightly reduced risk for SSI (odds ratio 0.9).
