Bodilsen et al identified risk factors for brain abscess. The authors are from Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark and University of Amsterdam.


Risk factors with important population-attributable fractions:

(1) neurosurgery (aOR 19.3)

(2) solid cancer (aOR 4.12)

(3) ear, nose and throat infections (aOR 3.81)

(4) immunomodulating therapy (aOR 5.71)

 

Additional risk factors:

(1) head trauma (aOR 2.15)

(2) dental infections and/or dental surgery (aOR 4.61 and 2.57)

(3) ear, nose and throat surgery (aOR 2.85)

(4) congenital heart disease (aOR 15.6)

(5) diabetes mellitus (aOR 1.74)

(6) alcohol abuse (aOR 2.22)

(7) liver disease (aOR 2.37)

(8) kidney disease (aOR 2.04)

(9) lung abscess or bronchiectasis (aOR 8.15)

(10) hematological cancer (aOR 8.77)

(11) HIV infection (aOR 12)
