Bedford et al identified risk factors for the new onset of atrial fibrillation for an adult in the ICU. The authors are from the University of Oxford.
Patient selection: adult in a general ICU
Outcome: new onset of atrial fibrillation
Predictors with strong evidence:
(1) older age
(2) male sex
(3) preceding cardiovascular disease (including chronic heart failure and valvular heart disease)
(4) acute renal failure
(5) acute respiratory failure
(6) higher APACHE score
(7) vasopressor use
Predictors with moderate evidence:
(1) white ethnicity
(2) chronic lung disease
(3) stroke
(4) diabetes mellitus
(5) obesity
(6) malignancy
(7) sepsis
(8) shock (see vasopressors above)
(9) pulmonary embolism
