Description

Bassetti et al reported risk factors for intra-abdominal candidiasis in a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help to identify a patient to monitor more aggressively. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and members for the Study Group for Infections in Critically Ill Patients (ESGCIP) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).

Patient selection: intensive care unit

Risk factors:

(1) recurrent gastrointestinal perforations (OR 13.9)

(2) anastomotic leak (OR 6.6)

(3) abdominal drain (OR 6.6)

(4) prior receipt of antifungal drugs for >= 7 days (OR 4.3)

(5) prior receipt of antibiotics for >= 7 days (OR 3.8)

The risk of intra-abdominal candidiasis is determined by the number and nature of the risk factors present.
