Description

Barmparas et al identified risk factors for empyema following diaphragmatic injury. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Medical Center.


 

Patient selection: diaphragmatic injury following trauma in adults (>= 18 years) who survived more than 48 hours.

 

Risk factors for empyema on multivariate analysis:

(1) gastric injury

(2) ISS >= 20

 

Additional factors associated with the development of empyema:

(1) splenic injury or splenectomy
