Description

Baboudjian et al identified risk factors for a urinary tract infection (UTI) after flexible ureteroscopy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Aix-Marseille University in France.


Patient selection: flexible ureteroscopy

 

Reason for procedure: nephrolithiasis, upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma

 

Patient preparation: use of a ureteral access sheath, antibiotic prophylaxis, preoperative urine culture

 

Risk factors for UTI after the procedure:

(1) female sex (odds ratio 2.2)

(2) history of UTI within the past 6 months (odds ratio 2.3)

(3) preoperative polymicrobial urine culture (odds ratio 4.5)

(4) increased operative time (odds ratio 1.02
