Description

Atas et al reported risk factors for infertility in patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from interventions to improved fertility. The authors are from Gazi University, Hacettepe University and Osmangazi University in Turkey.


Patient selection: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF)

 

Infertility is defined as failure to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse.

 

Risk factors for infertility from multivariate analysis:

(1) female sex (OR 4.5)

(2) onset of clinical FMF before 20 years of age (OR 3.0)

(3) more severe disease, as measured by the ISSF (OR 4.8)

(4) failure to respond to colchicine (OR 2.8)

 

Protective factors:

(1) therapy with IL-1 beta antagonists
