Description

Ariyaratnam et al identified risk factors for deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) following coronary bypass surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Castle Hill Hospital and University of York.

Patient selection: cardiac bypass surgery with or without concomitant procedures

Risk factors for deep sternal wound infection from a logistic regression model:

(1) older age (odds ratio 1.055 per year)

(2) body mass index (BMI; odds ratio 1.076)

(3) diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 2.0)

(4) chronic lung disease (odds ratio 2.5)

Morbidity and mortality are higher in patients requiring re-opening for DSWI.
