Angue et al identified risk factors for a patient who is being admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) following overseas travel. This can help to identify a patient who should be screened for resistant bacteria and placed in isolation pending evaluation. The authors are from CHU Felix Guyon, Hop Bichat-Claude Bernard, and Universite Paris Diderot in France.
Patient selection: admitted to ICU after travel abroad within past 6 months
Risk factors for being colonized with multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDR):
(1) diabetes mellitus
(2) (hospitalized abroad) AND (antibiotic treatment)
The authors recommended isolation of the patient and screening for MDR. The screening protocol should be comprehensive and not stopped if a first screening test is negative.
