Description

Anderson et al identified risk factors for complications following adrenalectomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of California Davis and the University of California San Francisco.

Patient selection: adrenalectomy

Complications: bleeding, pneumonia, mechanical ventilation required > 48 hours, sepsis

Risk factors for complications:

(1) modified Frailty Index of Seib et al >= 3 out of 11 comorbid conditions (Seib is second author of current paper; odds ratio 7.2 vs 0 conditions)

(2) open surgery (vs laparoscopy; odds ratio 4.8)

(3) malignant tumor (odds ratio 1.8)

The risk of complications increases with the number of risk factors.
