Description

The risk for stroke related to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is low but has been rising as more high-risk patients undergo the procedure and more complex procedures are performed. The authors are from West Virginia University and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

Patient selection: stroke after PCI

Risk factors for stroke associated with PCI:

(2) cardiogenic shock

(3) atrial fibrillation

(4) older age

(5) performance of PCI at low or intermediate volume center

Stroke after PCI is associated with the length of hospital stay, in-hospital mortality and disability.
