Risk factors associated with driver fatigue:
(1) lack of driver awareness about the signs and symptoms associated with fatigue
(2) driver unable to take a break when needed
(3) managers not allowing adequate breaks in the work schedule
(4) demanding route scheduling with little driver control over the delivery sequence
(5) drinking alcohol the night before
(6) failure to observe restrictions on hours worked
(7) frequently changing shifts
(8) high percentage of driving on interstate highways (roadways)
(9) start of shift very early in the morning
(10) driving 6 or 7 days in the week
Drivers were better able to manage fatigue when the schedule was sufficiently flexible for appropriate breaks, with some control over the sequence of deliveries.
