Risk Factors of Abella et al for Complications and Readmission After Same-Day Discharge (SDD) Arthroplasty

Description

The frequency of same-day discharge (SDD) following a joint arthroplasty has been increasing. It is important to carefully select patients for this pathway. The authors are from Stanford University, University of Hawaii, and Northeast Ohio Medical University.


Patient selection: same-day discharge following total knee or hip arthroplasty

 

Risk factors for postoperative complications:

(1) preoperative dyspnea

(2) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

(3) hypoalbuminemia

 

Risk factors for readmission:

(1) preoperative dyspnea

(2) hypertension

(3) chronic corticosteroid use

(4) bleeding disorder

(5) hypoalbuminemia

 

The authors noted that patients chosen for SDD were younger, less likely to smoke, had a lower BMI, and fewer comorbidities.
