Description

Abbasi et al reported risk factors for nosocomial infection for a patient on hemodialysis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Taylor's University in Malaysia.


Patient selection: hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease

 

Risk factors for nosocomial infection:

(1) longer hospital stay

(2) longer duration on hemodialysis and/or more hemodialysis sessions

(3) multiple catheter sites

(4) older age of the patient

(5) history of blood transfusion

(6) diabetes mellitus

(7) lower hemoglobin concentration (anemia)

(8) low WBC count (leukopenia)

(9) longer catheter duration

(10) poor personal hygiene
